Half-day naps in some Japanese companies
People’s lifestyle and the use of digital devices such as smartphones and television have caused people to sleep less during the night. Lack of sleep is very harmful to the health of the body and reduces the power of alertness, intelligence and mental health.
In Japan, lack of sleep has become a serious public concern. Tech companies are among the pioneers in setting up nap rooms among Japanese companies. The Tokyo company Nextbeat has launched two sleeping rooms called “strategic sleeping rooms”, one for women and the other for men.
These rooms were installed in the company’s headquarters, and more rooms are going to be prepared for the employees to sleep.
Employees are not allowed to use mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops in the nap rooms. Devices are installed in these rooms that block radio and mobile communications.
In these rooms, comfortable sofas with relaxing colors, scents and smells are used so that employees can refresh themselves better during their breaks and return to their work.
The company Nextbeat, which operates in the field of IT services, allows its employees to use these rooms for 30 minutes, and this time is considered a part of the working hour. They can leave their workplace from 9 am and go to the nap room. In addition, the employees of this company are not allowed to work late and at night in the company.
The real estate development company Mitsubishi Estate also moved furniture to its new office in January this year and allocated three rooms for rest and half-day naps. This company, in collaboration with Neurospace, which is active in the field of sleep planning for companies, has conducted evaluations on its employees and found that if they have a short rest, they will be more focused and motivated throughout the day.
The reports of the companies that set up nap rooms show that the employees initially refuse to use these rooms, but little by little, by understanding its goals and results, they are willing to lie down and take a nap at work.
Modifying the sleep pattern
Some other Japanese companies are trying to improve their nighttime sleep patterns by installing devices that can measure how sleepy their employees are. On the other hand, there are portable devices that can measure the duration and depth of a sleep.
Japanese companies became sensitive to the problem of their employees’ sleep and are looking for ways to improve their sleep at night and to have enough energy and focus to do things during the day.
