Nursing in Canada
The first part
In Canada, professional nursing generally falls into one of the following three categories.
_Registered Nurse – RN
_Licensed Practical Nurse – LPN
_Registered Psychiatric Nurse- RPN
Only professionals with a license or work permit from the nursing system or association of one of the Canadian provinces who intend to work there can obtain the title of “nurse”. Each province or territory has its own regulations that allow them to protect public health and safety and require nurses to meet the required standards and requirements. There is no comprehensive process at the national level for licensing/licensing of nurses in Canada. Each province has a separate evaluation process and nursing system.
Registered Nurse
Nurses who pass a national licensing exam in addition to a 4-year degree in nursing are called registered nurses (RNs). Licensed nurses (or a licensed nurse’s aide) who work under the supervision of an RN are called Registered Practical Nurses. The educational programs of these nurses include theoretical and clinical programs in the field of medical and surgical care.
Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse (in Ontario)
LPNs complete a two-year postgraduate course in nursing at one of the Canadian colleges. This course for general LPNs includes theoretical and clinical instruction in medicine and surgery. The following nurses are also RNs.
Registered Psychiatric Nurse / licensed psychiatric nurse
RPNs complete a two and a half to four year course in psychiatric nursing at the college or university level. This course includes theoretical and clinical instructions in the field of psychiatry and general nursing.
International students or nurses who intend to work in this field must be eligible to apply as one of the RN, LPN or RPN titles. All students who have not previously registered to work as a nurse must create an account with NNAS before applying to any of the nursing programs. After receiving the results of the NNAS assessment, the nursing system will determine whether you are eligible to enroll, take other assessments, or take certain other courses.
