No new permanent migration routes for #Australian refugees
Next week’s budget bill does not provide for any new solutions or pathways for permanent residence for refugees on temporary visas.
Permanent migration to Australia has been on a downward trajectory due to the coronavirus outbreak and the subsequent closure of borders, and this event will cause long-term economic damage.
Australia offers permanent residency to two groups of asylum seekers
Prime Minister Scott Morrison asked on Thursday whether attracting skilled and talented people could help fill the gap.
Mr Morrison added that programs were being implemented to ensure that people in need of support and protection could stay in Australia.
Two programs are currently being implemented for the 18,000 people who arrived in Australia by boat before 2014.
So asylum seekers on temporary protection visas can stay in Australia for up to three years.
Under another codified program, safe haven enterprise visa holders are allowed to work or study in one of the country’s regions for up to five years before applying for a permanent residence visa.
Another 80,000 are asylum seekers who have entered Australia via air borders and are now holding bridging visas. The claims of these individuals for protection are under investigation.
The prime minister rejected any new plans to allow refugees to stay.
“You don’t have to fix what isn’t broken,” he said in a speech at the National Press Club in Canberra. There is a special mechanism to resolve such issues.
