Does the weakened immune system affect the growth of chickens?

Many factors affect the immune response of an animal under stress. In chickens, vaccinations, poor feed quality and contamination with mycotoxins are stressful factors and can reduce the growth rate of chickens.

Extensive research conducted in the last two decades shows that mycotoxins are present in most of the ingredients used in chicken feed.

Significant reduction in production in poultry farms is associated with obvious clinical signs and wounds seen after necropsy.

Also, poultry losses can occur due to eating foods that are highly contaminated with mycotoxins.

Most of the cases of mycotoxin contamination are chronic and result from the absorption of metabolites produced by fungi that have a small contamination dose.

The result of this small contamination with mycotoxins also causes a measurable reduction in production and the occurrence of non-specific changes such as subcutaneous bleeding and weakening of the immune system.

One can ask whether mycotoxins can affect the normal functioning of the immune system of chickens in such a way as to make them vulnerable to viruses and pathogenic bacteria.

The answer is yes they can and they do.
