sending email
1. Part one: Subject
Due to the high volume of applicants applying to Canadian universities, Canadian professors may receive more than 50 emails per day in addition to daily work emails related to their university and group. Since the main way of communication between applicants and professors is through email, it is very important that the email is read. There have been many times that I have talked with applicants who have complained about their professors not answering their emails. In such a situation, the main question that comes to mind is, has your email been read at all by the teacher?
What should we do to have our email read?
Consider the e-mail inbox of a professor who, after answering the e-mails of people he knows, still has more than 50-60 unread e-mails. Do you have the opportunity to read all of them?
– Probably not
Can you guess what it does to speed up the process of reading emails?
– Yes! It will be decided on the subject of the email.
How should the email subject be?
Your email subject should specify at least two topics. who are you Why should he care about your email?
-who are you? Applicants for admission to master’s degree/doctorate/postdoc
MSc./Ph.D./Postdoctoral applicant
– Why should he read your email? Because you are interested in what he has! So you have to specify that you are interested in the professor’s field research.
Interested in X
X should be a specific research with a short and non-general title that you are interested in and the professor has mentioned work on that topic on his website or in his articles. Avoid generalizations, but do not be so detailed that the subject of your email becomes longer than what can be seen in the email inbox.
It is recommended to include the semester for which you intend to apply in the subject of the email.
For example: Fall 2019
