UbiQD stands for Ubiquitous Quantum Dots, a New Mexico-based advanced materials company, has installed a series of these solar windows at a hotel in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The Holiday Inn Express, UbiQD headquarters and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory each now feature windows equipped with sun-concentrating quantum dot technology in glass. These three sites will serve as locations for piloting the technology to examine parameters such as window orientation, the role of the technology at different times of the day, seasonality of performance, temperature, construction and installation methods.

These test installations in construction projects are the first real tests of UbiQD, and the tests aim to confirm the importance of parameters such as window orientation, time of day, seasonality, temperature, and construction and installation methods.

Double-glazed insulating glass can be installed in most structures. “We love working with the UbiQD team, the development of this new technology is exciting and very encouraging,” said Dominic Otero, Regional Director of GlazTech.

In late 2018, UbiQD received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), which provided $750,000 in funding over two years to ramp up production. In 2020 and 2021, NSF awarded UbiQD additional grants of $660,000 for continued development of quantum dot windows and pilot projects. The company’s solar window program has also received support from NMEDD, the Department of Energy and several other organizations, and in late 2020 the company announced that it had received a $7 million investment.

Brian Patrick Martin, co-owner of Holiday Inn Express and Suites Los Alamos, said, “We and our partners are excited to be at the forefront of integrated building sustainability and energy technology, and frankly, we’re fortunate to have this opportunity. ”

UbiQD plans to accelerate the deployment of its quantum window technology in 2023. Other window installation projects are planned in New Mexico, Colorado and Washington state.

Los Alamos-based UBQD is an advanced materials company focused on innovations in applications of quantum dots in agriculture, clean energy and security. UBQD’s new quantum dots help companies use these nanomaterials to improve their products. One of the products of UBIQD company that was developed in the first phase of using this grant is UbiGro, this product is a light layer that creates a more optimal greenhouse for crops using fluorescence color spectrum.
