Four points about the construction of a nuclear power plant in Khuzestan/again they misidentified the priorities!
Hamidreza Shokohi
The construction of the 300 MW Karun nuclear power plant in Darkhoin, Khuzestan, was started with the presence of the head of the Atomic Energy Organization. This power plant is supposed to be built within 7 years at a cost of two billion dollars. Read these four points and judge for yourself:
1. The construction of nuclear power plants has no place in the world due to the high costs and environmental risks, and except for China, almost all other countries have stopped the construction of their nuclear power plants or reduced their number and have turned to renewable energies such as solar energy. The wind and the like are gone.
2. We have no good memories of the construction of Bushehr nuclear power plant and similar power plants in Iran. Power plants that cost the nation far more than expected and had little efficiency. A prominent example is the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which was completed after many years at great expense and produces only one thousand megawatts of electricity, while, for example, the electricity production capacity of the Shahid Rajaei Qazvin power plant is twice that of the Bushehr power plant, with far less costs than the Bushehr nuclear power plant!
3. The cost of building a thermal power plant to produce a thousand megawatts of electricity is about 650 million euros, but to produce 300 megawatts of electricity from the Karun nuclear power plant, three times the cost!
4. The construction of a nuclear power plant to produce electricity in Darkhoin, Khuzestan, when all this gas is wasted and can be used, is not a priority. Iran ranks third in the world with 17.4 billion cubic meters of gas flaring, and an important part of this flaring is related to Khuzestan province. The immediate solution for electricity supply is to use gas that is wasted, not to build an expensive nuclear power plant, that too with a small production of 300 megawatts! A power plant with a capacity of 1000 megawatts needs about six million cubic meters of gas in 24 hours. Calculate for yourself how much electricity can be produced with 17.4 billion cubic meters of gas wasted in the form of flares! Certainly, the investment needed to produce electricity from the gas that is currently being wasted is much less than the investment needed to produce atomic electricity, and its efficiency is much higher. But for years, our officials misidentify priorities and pour the country’s capital down the drain.
