Kissinger: The possibility of armed conflict between America and China

The former US Secretary of State said on Thursday, November 22, that trade talks between the US and China are merely a substitute for more important talks about conflicts between the two countries. Henry Kissinger warned that an armed conflict could occur if they failed to resolve their own trade war.

The statements of Henry Kissinger, the former US Secretary of State, were made at a conference in Beijing on the future of these two economic giants of the world. “If this conflict is allowed to go on indefinitely, the outcome could be worse than what happened in Europe,” he told the Economic Forum. World War I happened over much smaller crises. And today the weapons have become much more powerful.”

This veteran diplomat added: “China is an important economic country. So are we. Therefore, it is possible that we step on each other’s feet all over the world.”

During the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, a plan to reduce the nuclear capabilities of the two countries was a top priority, Kissinger said. But because the conflict between the US and China has always been passive, there is no framework for Washington to engage with Beijing as a military power, he warned.

It could be dangerous for humanity, he said, if two sides see every issue in the world from a confrontational perspective. Kissinger said the trade talks were just a substitute for more substantive talks about the conflict between the two, including tensions over Hong Kong.

Asked whether unrest in the semi-autonomous region of China could be a tipping point for a new Cold War, Kissinger said he hoped the highly emotional issue could be resolved through talks.

In this economic meeting, former US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson also said that he believes that the US and China are definitely moving in the wrong direction. Growing barriers to visa issuance and movement of people, restrictions on trade and technology, and ongoing economic tensions will worsen countries and the world as a whole, he warned.

Paulson, who was the Treasury Secretary of the George Bush administration, said: “If the world’s two largest economies do not have the necessary mechanisms to cooperate, when the next crisis occurs, which will occur due to the occurrence of financial crises, our regret will be very big.”
