A solution for lack of motivation

#Solution for lack of motivation

The second part

Lack of motivation due to conflict of values

Values are ideas that a person believes are important in life. A value conflict occurs when two or more of your most important values cannot be met in a particular situation at the same time. In this case, you struggle to understand what is really important to you. When you feel conflicted, you are pulled back and forth between values. You may experience a sudden short-term surge of motivation to do something and then become unmotivated and move on to something else. You may lose your motivation altogether because the wasted energy of dealing with inner conflict quickly erodes and kills your motivation.

Coping with value conflicts

You need to understand the value conflict you are in. Then take the role of mediator between the parts of your being that support conflicting values so that they can work together as a team again. First, understand which of your inner values are in conflict.

Take paper and pen and draw a vertical line down the middle of the page so that you have two columns. In each column, write about two different paths you are drawn to. Finally, briefly mention what each part of your being wants from you. Now choose one of the two columns and categorize the information you have written in response to these questions: Why does this part of me want this? What does he wish to achieve by reaching this desire? Keep asking questions and writing the answers until you feel that you have received the ultimate desire of that part of you. Then do the same for the next column and be prepared for when you reach the level where the answers for both columns are the same.

Finally, when you reach the conclusion, you will see that all parts of your being always follow a common desire. For the simple reason that they are all part of you. In other words, both parts of your existence ultimately have the same desire, but they prefer different solutions to fulfill it.

Now that you know what your real desire is, it’s time to evaluate the solutions supported by each of your internal departments and decide on the best solution.

Often, when you clarify your real desire, new ways to achieve it will come to your mind that you have not noticed before. Sometimes when doing this exercise you will find a way that covers all of your values, but sometimes this is not possible. If you take the time to examine your values and consciously choose to prioritize one value over another for a while, this clarity will still be there. It relieves your sense of inner conflict and restores your motivation. For example, if you give up playing computer games for a while because of exams, it was your conscious choice that you temporarily preferred one value to another.
