Customer: How much does it cost to do this?
Surveyor: Three million tomans.
Customer: This amount is too expensive for this work!!
Surveyor: How much do you think it will cost?
Customer: no more than five hundred thousand tomans! It’s a simple task! I just need the coordinates of my land rectangle.
Surveyor: I cannot prioritize my time for such small sums.
Customer: You and your colleagues are very greedy.
Surveyor: I’m sorry you feel that way. Why don’t you do it yourself?
Customer: But. But. I don’t know how to do these things.
Surveyor: For a million tomans, I’ll teach you exactly how to do it. Then you can spend 700 thousand tomans for equipment rental and you will still save 1 million 300 thousand tomans – plus. You’ll gain the knowledge and experience you need for the next time you want to do something yourself.
Customer: Deal!! Let’s do it.
Surveyor: You need some tools to get started. “So you have to buy or rent a multi-frequency GPS system, total station, data acquisition device and a few other things.”
Customer: But I don’t have all that equipment and I can’t buy all of it for one job.
Surveyor: Well, I will let you rent my tools for a daily rent of seven hundred thousand tomans. And you will still save one million three hundred thousand tomans.
Customer: That’s a lot of money, but I’m renting your tool.
Surveyor: OK! I’ll be back on Friday and we can start.
Customer: Wait. I can’t on Friday. I only have time today.
Surveyor: Sorry, I only teach on Fridays because I have to prioritize my time and my tools are at the door all week to do work for my other clients.
Customer: OK!! I sacrifice my plans with my family on Friday.
Surveyor: Yes. me too. oh Forgot. To do your job, you also have to pay for car rental and utilities, so it’s best to use your own vehicle.
Customer: Ummm. U know. I was thinking. Maybe it’s better to do it yourself. I’d rather pay someone to do it right than go through all the trouble myself.
Surveyor: That’s a smart move, sign this form and please step out of the way so I can work.
The fact is this.
When you pay for mapping, you’re not only paying for the consumables used, you’re also paying for:
– Knowledge
– Experience
– Mapping equipment including GPS and total station and tripod and its accessories
– Services
– Time
– punctuality
– Responsibility
– Professionalism
– accuracy
– Manual work
– Sacrifices
– safety and security
– Payment of tax obligations
No one should belittle a professional’s work by judging its price – especially when they don’t know all the elements or costs involved in doing such a job.
This was just a mash-up of an old story I heard once and I’m sharing it to support crafters, professionals and entrepreneurs everywhere!
You can’t bargain for a service that you really don’t have the skills or knowledge to perform. You can’t have a high quality gourmet dinner party for the same price as a deli. And when skilled people really know their worth, you can’t be mad.
