Religions were one
In the winter of 1353, at the beginning of the Christian fasting days, Imam Musa Sadr delivers a sermon in the Kabushish Church of Beirut. Charles Helou, the former president of Lebanon, narrates this incident like this: “For the first time in the history of Christianity, a non-Catholic priest speaks in a Catholic church and for a group of believers, in the preaching position.” The Imam’s next move was to invite Christian elders to deliver Friday prayer sermons, but due to the civil war, this plan was never realized.
Some passages from this sermon are as follows:
Religions were one, because they served a single purpose: calling to God and serving man. And these two are the only manifestations of truth. And when the religions sought to serve themselves, differences arose between them. Each religion’s attention to itself became so much that it almost led to forgetting the main goal. Differences intensified and human suffering increased.
Religions were one and pursued a common goal: fighting against earthly gods and tyrants and helping the oppressed and suffering. And these two are the only true manifestations. And when the religions won and along with them the oppressed also won, the tyrants changed their face and went ahead to get the spoils and in pursuit of the order of expulsion, they rose up in the name of religions and took the weapon of religion, and this is how the suffering and hardship of the oppressed It doubled and the religions suffered hardships and differences. There is no conflict except for the interests of profiteers.
Religions were one, because the starting point of all of them, that is, God, is the same; And their goal, that is, human beings, is the same; And the platform of their developments, that is, the universe, is the same; And when we forgot the goal and moved away from the service of man, God also left us alone and moved away from us and we went different ways and turned into different parts and divided the one world and in pursuit of serving interests. We went out of our way and chose other gods, other than God, and led man to destruction.
