The corona crisis has made it more difficult to deport asylum seekers from Sweden
The closing of the borders due to the Corona crisis has made it difficult to deport asylum seekers from Sweden. For this reason, hundreds of asylum seekers are in detention in immigration detention centers, and the waiting time for these people to be deported from Sweden has become longer than before.
Mustafa Hosseini is 20 years old and is from Afghanistan. He was rejected by the Immigration Department because he was over 18 years old, so he has been waiting for deportation to Afghanistan for five months now. Afghanistan has also closed its borders due to the Corona crisis.
Mustafa Hosseini told Swedish TV in this regard. It is very unpleasant and very difficult to be imprisoned here. We are not allowed to go out, study or work.
Mustafa Hosseini: I want to be able to study, work and earn my expenses again. I want to be allowed to stay in Sweden. This is my only wish.
According to Swedish TV, Mustafa did not dare to return to Afghanistan when he was rejected because his father was killed by the Taliban and his mother also died on the way to emigration. After receiving a negative answer, he stayed in Sweden when the police found him sleeping in a dirty warehouse and working in poor conditions like a slave in a pizzeria.
Katrina Friskman, the spokesperson of the police, wrote in a letter to the news section of Swedish TV: In practice, it was difficult to carry out deportations, but now due to the ban on flights to many countries due to the corona crisis, it has become more difficult to deport people outside of Sweden.
Johan Huo, the legislator of the immigration court in Malmö, told Swedish TV: “The uncertainty and waiting for a long time for an answer is clearly not good and not acceptable.” We also accept this issue. On the other hand, the situation of Corona has also affected this issue. We have had to cancel more cases than before.
Due to the corona virus, the Immigration Department has announced a ban on visits in its detention centers and has also reduced the number of its detention centers from 512 to 242.
