Conducting rapid training courses of construction professions in Quebec with payment of 750 dollars per week
The strong need of the province of Quebec for the construction of new schools, new housing, kindergartens, residences for the elderly and roads has forced the government of Francois Lugo to resort to exceptional incentives to provide the necessary workforce.
For this purpose, the government of Quebec plans to launch a rapid training course to provide trained labor in the construction sector, so that between four and five thousand workers will be available to the province’s construction industry by summer.
These four- to six-month training courses begin in January for five building construction professions.
Participants will be paid an average of $25 per hour or $750 per week to encourage them to attend these courses. This is the wage that an apprentice earns as they enter the construction industry.
Those interested in participating in these courses must register by December 15.
Those interested in earning a Diploma of Professional Development (DEP) in five targeted construction trades can begin their training in November, December or January with graduate scholarships ranging from $9,000 to $15,000.
The province of Quebec has a serious shortage of carpenters, mechanical excavator operators, heavy equipment operators, tinsmiths and refrigeration technicians. Plumbing or electrical professions are also vital and needed professions in Quebec, and the government should increase the capacity to accept professional diplomas in these specialties, but these professions are not currently among these two mentioned courses.
Prime Minister Francois Lugo will announce more details of these training courses in a press conference today. Education Minister Bernard Drainville, Immigration and Labor Minister Jean Boulet and Employment Minister Catherine Champagne-Jourdan will accompany Lugo to the conference.
