Constipation in ostriches and how to prevent it

Constipation in ostriches and how to prevent it:

1. Part 1:

ostrich
This bird is omnivorous and lives easily in dry and low water areas. In terms of stability against adverse natural conditions, in the face of lack of water and food, camels are similar to birds in terms of appearance. Currently, ostriches can be introduced as future livestock in many regions. Ostriches are famous for their curiosity and especially their interest in shiny and colored objects, so they may swallow foreign objects and provide the necessary ground for the occurrence of constipation (accumulation). Therefore, the factors affecting the health and hygiene of these birds are one of the most important aspects of this type of rearing. Yabostec is a disease that often causes problems in the growth of chickens.

Currently, two types of constipation have been identified:

1. Acute constipation or constipation that the ostrich has acquired recently, which appears with severe symptoms and in a short time, between 12 and 24 hours.
The second type is chronic or long-term constipation.

Normally, acute constipation results from ostriches consuming a large amount of non-edible materials, and this type can result from excessive consumption of sand, dirt, gravel, coarse grass, and such materials.

Acute obstruction leads to colic and death of the bird. Usually, the pre-stomach accumulation partially prevents the passage of substances completely, which can cause its chronic type. Such birds usually do not gain normal weight and appear to be malnourished and tend to swallow inedible substances.

The type of feed, stress factors, environmental factors, etc. can be considered important factors of constipation in the ostrich breeding industry.

2. Part II:

Prevention and treatment of constipation:

In preventing the occurrence of this disease, it is very important to pay attention to the stress caused by transfer and change of location and access to foreign substances.

The easiest way is to lubricate the oral passage, which vegetable oils are able to help break down some of these substances, so that the ostriches will get a normal diet again. When the diagnosis is easily possible, surgical intervention can be done. It is very effective that after opening the pre-stomach, the pre-stomach and gallstones can be cleaned. It is suggested to feed Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) oily drug in water in the amount of ¼ teaspoon for ostrich chicks up to 2 tablespoons for an adult ostrich.
Other treatment principles include the following:
1⃣ Provision of medical paraffin, barium sulfate and lactose in oral form
2. Free and easy access to food to prevent the bird from eating foreign objects
3. Remove foreign objects from the bed and storage place
