Very interesting memoir by a medical student
When we were medical students, we had a professor in the heart department who was one of our best professors.
Every chance he got, he tried to teach us a new point and conveyed his knowledge to us in the best possible way.
He used to put us in the bush of experience and action in suitable opportunities.
In the first days of the ward, he took us to the bedside of a young man who had just been hospitalized.
After greeting and paying respects, he said to him:
If you allow these colleagues of mine to examine your heart.
The young man also accepted.
Then he turned to us, who were a combination of interns and interns, and said:
Each of you listen carefully to this patient’s heartbeat and write down everything you hear on a piece of paper and give it to me.
The teacher’s opinion about using this method was that if one of us was wrongly diagnosed, he should not be ashamed of the other.
Each of us in turn examined the patient’s heart and wrote our opinion on a piece of paper and gave it to the professor.
We all wanted to know if our diagnosis was correct or not.
The teacher observed and read our writings one by one. The answers were varied. One had mentioned an increased heart rate.
One wrote that the rhythm was irregular, one wrote that the beats are normal, one heard a weak gallop rhythm, one stated that the patient is obese and vague sounds are heard, and one pointed to the existence of an extra sound in one of the centers.
The professor was silent for a few moments and looked at us, we were waiting for him to introduce one of those writings which was more correct.
But with complete surprise, the master said:
Unfortunately, all this is wrong.
And while shaking the only remaining paper in his right hand, he continued:
The only paper that can be close to the truth is this paper whose author is undoubtedly an honest person.
It can be used in medicine in the future.
I read his writing, judge for yourself.
We were all waiting for the teacher to read the correct text.
He said:
Unfortunately, due to my lack of experience, I am not able to hear a voice on this paper, and while looking at our surprised eyes, he continued:
I don’t know, while this patient has dextrocardia, and his heart is on the right side, how did you hear all these different sounds on the left side of his chest?
My good children, since you are a student, you should know that not diagnosing is not a fault, but making a wrong diagnosis based on a wrong examination is considered a big fault and can be dangerous for the patient.
In medicine, accuracy, honesty, patience and experience are the first words.
Try not to misdiagnose your patient carelessly or make a wrong decision for him.
In any case, we must have a fair diagnosis, in this case we will have less judgment.
So, the above article is a human lesson, not just medicine
Let’s learn fairness to make humanity flow in life.
