Irresponsible universities
Check out the University of Melbourne website! It says that I am an engaging university that is committed to solving the state’s problems, the main of which is water. It says how much I have worked on the water of the state in the last ten years and what have been its achievements.
In which website of Iranian universities do we have a local statement that says that I am committed to this province, city and people and have done these things to improve this situation? In which of our grant allocation models has working for local people been an indicator? For example, if a professor gave a speech to local people to inform them about an unpleasant phenomenon, or if someone worked at Mazandaran University to restore wetlands or save migratory birds, does he have a privilege in our educational and research system? Or are we saying that it would have been better if he wrote two articles instead of these things? A university whose number of faculty members has increased from 1,000 to 2,000, and the number of students has increased from 6,000 to 10,000, but the poverty and harm in its local environment is increasing, this university is irresponsible.
Are there points if a professor works in an NGO to improve local businesses? Or do we say put your finger on this device to determine when you arrived in the morning and when you left in the evening?
If from tomorrow morning all the professors of our universities do not go to work for six months, the local community will not feel that anything is missing; Whereas if the bakers do this one day, everyone will notice. Because dealing with local missions is not defined in our university system. Is the university a place of discussion and reference for media, civil activists, political parties, private companies, chamber of commerce, etc. Is? Or do they continue their work without needing to go to the university and at most hire one or two people from among the professors? Is the university’s presence in the place for the sake of individuals or for its legal and organizational dignity?
In a place where we have an agricultural faculty, where we use the most fertilizers and poisons, and the incidence of gastrointestinal cancer is high, this faculty is a candidate for irresponsibility. Somewhere, we have micro-particles, and in the last thirty years, there is no trace of micro-particles in the theses, articles, research projects, and courses of its local university. This university has thought that it only needs to produce articles to increase the growth rate of our international articles in ISI journals. The social responsibility of such a university should be doubted.
The evaluation model of our universities can change. Let’s not ask how many articles you have written in how many languages, let’s ask how effective you have been. The local community only understands the pain of the issues, it is the university that should identify the problem and provide a solution. The ultimate goal of the university, along with global and national obligations, is to improve the quality of life of citizens.
