Afghan immigrants and the idea of Iran

Abbas Akhundi – 20 May 2018

The statements of a senior diplomat in the national media, when he spoke about the Afghan brothers and sisters, had a wide reflection in the media and social networks. Most of the answers and reactions indicated the discouragement and even anger of the Iranian audience. Of course, a group in their logic, based on political realism and considering national interests, approved such a position and found it to be in line with the existing conditions. The realism claimed by the second group was based on the fact that Europe has not taken serious steps in upholding the JCPOA and standing by its obligations, and it should consider that the Afghan brothers and sisters living in Iran, if they cannot stay in Iran, and in simple and clear terms, Iran will If their expenses are not met, they will be forced to leave Iran and their first destination will be Europe.

Understanding the criticisms and discouragement and anger of the first group of this position was very clear. From their point of view, this is an instrumental approach to humans. This behavior is not only not worthy of Afanis, but the application of this policy in relation to any human community is against moral principles. Let alone the Afghans who have lived in Iran for many years and in many cases political and social activists have made great efforts for some of their basic rights. From an ethical point of view, one should be sensitive to turning human groups into hostages in negotiations and should not cross the boundaries of ethics.

In the world of cost and benefit and utilitarianism, it is understandable that Europe should try to realize the JCPOA and know in which fields and issues Iran can help Europe, or in other words, it has been for decades. Based on my managerial experience and work history in various executive fields of the country, I know that the presence of Afghans in Iran was not without cost. And on the other hand, it has also had its own interests for Iran. However, the subject under discussion is beyond material utilitarianism.

In addition to the need to pay attention to human values and adhere to the moral principles that were mentioned before, from the aspects of identity, is it possible to separate Iranian and Afani identity apart from official borders? Is it possible to have an idea of Iran and the actual nations of Iran’s civilization field do not have a share in it? The design of such words is indicative of a misunderstanding of the concept of the common life of nations within a civilization that has provided and guaranteed their security, prosperity and comfort throughout the centuries. Beyond that, the secret of resistance and stability is honor and entitlement and adherence to human values. The issue of immigrants in reaction to the policies of the Trump administration is to accept his logic, which is criticized by Iran’s official policy. Trump’s treatment of immigrants in the United States is one of the most shameful actions he has committed.
At the end, I draw everyone’s attention with this teaching of the Holy Qur’an:

O you who believe, be strong for the sake of Allah with martyrdom, and do not punish your people, but do not make Him righteous 8
O you who have believed, stand up for God [and] bear witness to justice, and of course, group enmity should not cause you not to do justice. Do justice because it is closer to piety, and fear God, because God is aware of what you do.
