According to the new visa scheme in the UK, graduates of the world’s top universities can apply to enter this country.
The UK government says the Talented People scheme, which launches today, Monday 30 May, will attract the brightest and best people in their early career years.
The scheme will be available to graduates from top non-UK universities who have graduated within the last five years.
Under this plan, graduates will be eligible regardless of their place of birth and will not need a job offer as a prerequisite to apply.
Successful applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s degree will receive a two-year work visa.
A three-year visa will be issued to PhD holders.
These people can then change their visa to other long-term employment visas if they meet certain conditions.
To be eligible, one must have graduated from a university that is in at least two of the three lists of the top 50 universities of the world university ranking agencies: the Times Higher Education Institutions and Universities Ranking System, the KIWS World University Rankings, and the World University Rankings (known as Shanghai ranking).
The list of eligible universities from 2021 has been published online by the British government and includes 20 universities in the United States, including Harvard, Yale and MIT.
17 other eligible educational institutions are also on the list, including the University of Hong Kong and the University of Melbourne and the Paris University of Sciences and Letters (PSL).
Some academics expressed disappointment that no South Asian, Latin American or African universities were included in the list.
