Animal feed production in China increased in terms of dollar value and weight in the previous year

Data on China’s feed industry published by the China Animal Feed Industry Association shows that improved pig populations, high poultry stocks, and growth in cattle and sheep breeding have led to an increase in feed production in terms of value and weight in 2020. According to data published by the same association on February 19, China has experienced a 10% growth compared to 2019 with the production of 252.8 million tons of animal feed. Complete feed reached 230.7 million tons in 2020 with an annual growth of 10%. Concentrate production in terms of weight increased by 22% compared to 2019 and reached 15 million tons per year. Premix production reached 5.95 million tons in 2020 with a 10% increase compared to the previous year. China also produced 13.9 million tons of feed additives last year, a growth of about 16 percent compared to 2019.
The production of amino acids reached 3.7 million tons with a 12% growth, vitamins increased by 26% to 1.6 million tons, and minerals increased by 17% to 6.9 million tons in 2020. The production value of China’s feed industry reached 145.9 billion dollars with a 17% growth in the previous year, while the value of feed additives increased by 11% compared to 2019 to reach 93.29 billion dollars.

The expansion of the capacity of pig farms in China in 2020, after the outbreak of African swine fever in 2018, increased the production of pig feed to 89.2 million tons in 2020. Of course, this amount is about 16% higher than in 2019, but it has not yet reached the record of 2018.
Ruminant feed production reached a record of 13.2 million tons in 2020 with a 19% increase compared to 2019. The feed of laying hens increased by 7.5% and the feed of broilers increased by 8% compared to 2019, reaching 33.5 and 91.8 million tons per year, respectively. In contrast, the production of aquatic feed decreased by 4% and reached 21.2 million tons. In relation to pet food, this industry witnessed an 11% growth and production of 963 thousand tons in 2020.
