Ashraf Habib Elah
The name of Ashraf Habib Elah is known to many civil engineers in the world. Perhaps one of the most well-known names in the contemporary world of structural and earthquake engineering. He and his company have been the origin of the production of several computing softwares that “today” many structures in the world are designed with these softwares.
Sep 2000, Itebz, as well as Seif, are products of Ashraf Habib Elah Company.
(Computers and Structures Company)
Ashraf Habib Elah is one of the products and outputs of Berkeley University.
(graduated in 1970)
In fact, one of the honors of the Civil Engineering Department of Berkeley University is that it has nurtured Ashraf and “added” ITBs, one of the graduates of this university, to the world of engineering.
“ITbz” is a software that my colleagues at Skidmore Company used to design Burj Khalifa in Dubai. And it is with ITBS modeling that they “dare” to attach thousands of tons of materials to a height of several hundred meters in the sky. It was Mr. William Baker who challenged the wind by using “Itbs”! And he said to the height of Burj Khalifa. Let me see if your strength will be more or my calculations?!
In short, Ashraf, this Pakistani-American engineer, has a great right to the world’s engineering and is one of the proudest of Berkeley.
“American Society of Civil Engineering” annual structure congress:
ASCE Structures Congress
It is scheduled to be held in Florida (Orlando) next month. Last week, I registered for the congress, excited that one of the key speakers this year is Ashraf Habib Elah. Today, one of my colleagues came and gave me the above paper. He said, do you know what Habib Elah’s speech is supposed to be about? My mental image was that he was going to give a speech about the latest computing capabilities of ITBS and the connection between computer and structure. Such words.
He said read the paper. it is interesting. Ashraf wants to talk about the fact that young engineers should have a sense of humor!
I read the summary of what he is going to say (above). This “Mr. Engineer” wants to say that if you are looking for financial advancement through engineering, you should know that fifteen percent of your financial success will be based on your “technical abilities” and the remaining eighty-five percent, based on “human communication abilities”. It will be you (what Habib Elah called human engineering!).
How effectively we can interact with others.
Ashraf wants to talk about the need to learn about human engineering. Why should we learn about “art”, “human psychology” and “human chemistry” (!) and why should young engineers learn these topics in order to succeed?
To be honest, I was shocked that these are supposed to be the focus of Ashraf Habib Elah’s talks. After all, it is a fact that he is considered to be the ultimate in structural engineering and calculations (!) and that such a person believes that technical ability is 15% of the story, is a gross statement.
These are the words that
They do not learn in schools and colleges.
Previously, I had written several times on the channel about the interest of the late Fazlur Rahman Khan (aka Einstein Sazeh) in art – he also happened to have roots in the subcontinent and was of Bangladeshi origin. But this time, hearing these words from the tongue of this phenomenon of the software world and earthquake, will be a novel story.
We will talk about this again.
