Criticism of the European Council on the mistreatment of #Greece in some #refugee centers
Criticizing Greece’s treatment of refugees, the #European Council called the conditions of some centers for the return of migrants pathetic. Greece has rejected this accusation and called its treatment of asylum seekers in accordance with international standards.
Experts of the Council of the European Union have again asked Greece to change its treatment of migrants. The Committee for the Prohibition of Torture of the European Union, which is headquartered in Strasbourg, has published a report calling on Greece to improve the conditions of accommodation for asylum seekers.
The committee also called for an end to the illegal return of asylum seekers to the external borders of the European Union and stated that such returns to Turkey are still ongoing, even in the case of unaccompanied children.
According to this report, in some centers for deportation and repatriation of asylum seekers, there is a pathetic situation and due to improper sanitary conditions, their living environment is prone to cockroach and bed bug infestation, and for this reason, tuberculosis is common in one of the centers.
In the report of the Committee for the Prohibition of Torture, it is stated that inhumane and humiliating behavior was sometimes observed in the refugee registration camps in the Aegean islands, which are financed by the European Union, and in some cases, up to eight people are accommodated in a place with an area of 10 square meters. .
The committee also criticized excessive security measures and unnecessary barbed wire in these centers, which are especially inappropriate for children and disabled people.
The published report is based on a visit to these centers in November 2023, and it specifically mentions the three islands of Kos, Lesbos and Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose expenses are financed by the European Union.
The committee says, during its visit, it received reliable information about the physical mistreatment of migrants by the police and border guards, and emphasizes that all migrants should be treated humanely and respectfully.
Racist insults are also mentioned in the report. It has also been criticized that some asylum seekers had to endure 18 months of detention.
Greece: Everything is according to international standards
In response, the Greek authorities have said that the conditions governing the refugee centers are in accordance with international standards.
At the same time, they talked about their plans for extensive renovation of these centers and added that the capacity to accept asylum seekers should be increased and medical procedures should be expanded in centers with controlled access.
Officials have rejected the charge of illegal expulsions and deportations and say that all centers have acted in full compliance with their international obligations.
In 2020, the Council of Europe criticized the detention conditions of migrants and asylum seekers in Greece. This country is one of the main destinations for refugees and asylum seekers who enter the European Union.
The Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg, France, together with its Court of Justice, is responsible for the protection of human rights in 47 member states.
