Demonstration of thousands of people in Barcelona against tourists in the summer season
More than two thousand Spanish citizens demonstrated against tourists on Saturday, July 16, at the same time as the beginning of the summer vacation in Barcelona.
The protestors, estimated to number up to 2,800 people, chanted: “Less tourists, better life” and “Passengers should return to their homes.”
After France, Spain is the second most visited country in the world.
Protesters say that the influx of tourists to Spain, especially big coastal cities such as Barcelona, has caused a sharp increase in the cost of living and especially the house rent.
The local government of Catalonia has promised to cancel the possibility of short-term house rentals to tourists by 2029 by implementing a plan. A similar plan has been pursued in Paris, the capital of France, since two years ago.
