Dubai is moving international flights to a new $35 billion airport

#Dubai is moving international flights to a new $35 billion airport.

Dubai city officials in the United Arab Emirates say they plan to move their international airport to a new center in the south of the city.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai, said in a statement that the development and construction project of the new airport named “Al Maktoum” in the south of this city will be completed “within the next 10 years”.

“We are building a new project for future generations, which in turn will ensure the continuous and sustainable development of our children and their children,” the statement said. “Dubai will be the world’s airport, gateway, urban hub and its new global center.”

The new airport will include five parallel runways and 400 flight gates. Currently, there is an airport at this location, which, like Dubai International Airport, has only two runways. This airport is supposed to be put into operation on 160 hectares and with the capacity of accepting 260 million passengers per year

Last year, 86.9 million passengers used Dubai International Airport for their flights. This number is more than the total number of passengers in 2019, before the corona virus pandemic.

In early February, Dubai announced its tourism statistics that it will host 17.15 million international visitors in 2023, with hotels renting an average of about 77 percent of their room capacity.

The sudden increase in the number of passengers has put new pressure on Dubai International Airport. This is despite the authorities not having the possibility to expand its current capacity, as the airport is bounded on all sides by residential neighborhoods and two major highways.

Al Maktoum International Airport was first opened in 2010 with a terminal about 45 km from Dubai. During the pandemic, the airport served as a parking lot for Emirates Airbus A380 double-deckers and other aircraft, and since then it has gradually served cargo and private flights.

The airport also hosts the biennial Dubai Air Show and has a vast, empty desert on its edge that it could expand into. Dubai’s ruler has said he plans to build an entire city, with a capacity of one million people, around the airport in South Dubai.

Financial pressures in the past caused the construction and development of “Al Maktoum” airport to stop once. Dubai’s 2009 financial crisis, triggered by the Great Depression, forced Abu Dhabi to agree to a $20 billion bailout.

The announcement of the new airport plan comes as the heaviest rainfall on record in the United Arab Emirates disrupted flights for days at the city’s airport last week, and airport officials are still working to improve the situation.
