Factors causing death in ostrich chicks:
It is often seen that dear colleagues try to treat the chickens without finding the main causes when casualties occur, which is not very successful.
When losses occur in order to find the main causes, try to check the causes of the problem first.
Of course, don’t forget that prevention is always easier and cheaper than treatment.
1. One of the most common causes of chicken deaths is a sudden change in diet.
Any change in the diet of ostriches at any age should be done at least within ten days and in the form of 10% per day, otherwise the chicks suffering from enterotoxemia gastrointestinal disease and as a result will be delayed in growth and will die if not treated.
2⃣ Lack of proper ventilation in chicken keeping rooms: For every 20 square meter room, two 30 suction ventilators connected to the dimmer should be installed in the room to adjust the temperature in cold and hot conditions. Also, 1 square meter of air inlet is needed for this room.
The amount of fresh air required for 40 one-month-old chickens is about 1200 cubic meters per hour.
3⃣ Lack of cleaning and disinfection of hatchery, hatchery baskets, underlays and room for keeping chickens, which leads to umbilical cord infection in chickens under 10 days old.
If the floor of the room is sifted with sand or dirt, it should be changed every 5 days, and if it is cement, waste should be collected every day with a spatula and flamed every 3 days.
4. High density in the room
The maximum number of chickens up to the age of one month is 2 chickens per square meter.
5. Yolk sac infection, which is caused by contamination of the egg shell during collection due to contamination of the laying hole or not cleaning and disinfecting the eggs after collection. In order to avoid contamination, the eggs should be collected immediately after laying.
6⃣ Accumulation of gravel caused by eating large pieces of hay, plastic, wood, etc.
The desire to eat non-edible substances is caused by nutritional deficiencies, this deficiency leads to faeces eating, gluttony, snoring and finally leads to accumulation and enteritis.
7⃣ Contaminated water; Try to give tap water to chickens under one month as much as possible, if it is not available, supply it with 20 liters.
8⃣ Contaminated food; The items that are purchased should not be damp or moldy and have a natural smell and taste.
9⃣ It was too cold or too hot in the place where the chickens were kept
The suitable temperature for keeping chickens under one month in the first week of life is 30 degrees Celsius, and with increasing age, the temperature should decrease by two degrees every 5 days.
Avoid bringing ostriches from other farms to prevent Newcastle disease and influenza. Injection of double-killed Newcastle-influenza vaccine is mandatory at 10 days of age and repeated after two weeks.
