Functions of geosynthetics in road construction projects

The geosynthetic, which is installed on the boundary between the aggregate materials of the sub-base layer and the natural sub-base layer, performs the function of separation to prevent the mixing of dissimilar materials of the natural sub-base soil and the sub-base layer. Geotextiles and geogrids perform this function by preventing the penetration of aggregate materials into the bed layer, which leads to local rupture of the support surface. Geotextiles also prevent the penetration of subgrade soil into the aggregates of the sub-base layer. The local rupture of the support surface and the penetration of the subgrade soil naturally occur on very soft, moist, and weak substrates. Penetration of natural subgrade soil can also occur under dynamic, long-term loading conditions caused by suction and movement of fine particles, especially when open-grained subbase layers are used. A small amount of fine aggregate is enough to cause a significant reduction in the internal friction angle of the selected aggregate, so separation is very important in order to maintain the design thickness, stability and bearing capacity of the sub-base layer.
