The ostrich is one of the flightless birds of the Ratites (Struthioniforme) order. This bird belongs to the family of ostriches (Struthionidae), the genus Struthio, and is native to Africa.
The ostrich has a long neck and legs and can run at a speed of about 65 kilometers per hour. Ostrich is the largest bird in existence. Its height reaches 2.5 meters and its weight reaches 140 kg. The egg of this bird reaches 20 cm in length and weighs 1.5 kg, which is cooked in about half an hour. This bird eats seeds, plants and small insects. The ostrich uses its strong legs to defend itself against predators and wild animals and is able to kick humans and even lions. The chick of this bird hatches in 40 days and becomes an adult bird in three to four years. The male ostrich has black feathers and the ends of its feathers and wings are white, but the feathers of the female ostrich are brown. The head and neck of the ostrich are featherless and bald. This bird often lives in a group among zebras or other animals such as buffaloes.
South African ostriches include African black-necked, blue-necked, and red-necked ostriches.
