Germany issues tens of thousands of work visas

The new skilled labor migration law is expected to attract more qualified workers from non-EU countries to Germany. In the past six months, thousands of visas have been issued for workers.

The German Foreign Ministry has issued more than 80,000 visas to people seeking to work in Germany in the first half of this year. According to the German news agency, about half of them, more than 40,000, were professional workers. Compared to this year, in 2023, about 30,000 visas were issued.

According to the data, the German Foreign Ministry issued more than 157,000 visas for employment purposes in 2023, 79,000 of which were for skilled workers.

The so-called “opportunity card”, which was introduced on June 1, has not had a major impact on the number of unemployed migrants. According to the German Foreign Ministry, about 200 visas have been issued under the program so far.

What changes will occur in Germany with the implementation of the skilled workers immigration law?

The requirements for the Opportunity Card are state-recognized vocational training with at least two years of vocational training or an academic thesis and speaking German or English.

Interested candidates receive scores that qualify them for an “opportunity card” based on their level of language proficiency, work experience, age and connection to Germany.

Germany will implement a skilled labor migration law from 2020 to support access to qualified labour.

The number of labor migrants from outside the EU in Germany has increased

In November 2023, the first part of the amendments to the law, approved by the coalition government, came into force. This sector primarily includes facilities for the EU Blue Card and also for recognized professional workers.

From March, skilled workers with educational qualifications and work experience can travel and work in Germany without a previous recognition process.

They do not need to provide proof of a recognized vocational training course in Germany, but a job offer with a gross annual income of at least 40,770 euros is sufficient.
