Hello
Just because you made a comparison with Europe, which was very appropriate, I will give my personal opinion.
I think it is because the competition in Europe is transparent unlike other places. You see the competition, you see the number of applicants, and usually the winner is also determined. Now it will be announced either through email or the university website. If not, everyone has the right to know. Regarding the programs, the number of funds and scholarships and their amount are already known. This makes the competition look scary. While there is the same competition for full fund (master’s and doctorate) in other places. It’s just hidden and you only see the number of acceptances, not rejections and funds! And this makes you even pay App Fee to try your luck.
This also reduces self-confidence. I saw many children with good resumes, they are also interested in doctorate, but they are worried about their level and that’s why they don’t apply at all. Well, I think you should at least let the teacher tell you that your level is low, instead of underestimating yourself from the beginning.
Another reason is that a doctor has to study for 4 years, or rather research, which is not necessarily liked by everyone. Although it has many advantages, many people prefer to start working faster. Of course, the interests of the work theme must also have an effect.
