Inhibition of metastasis is a new weapon in the war against cancer
@RoyanGene
Professor Michael Lisanti and his colleagues have made a new discovery that could turn cancer into a curable disease and eliminate people’s fear of getting cancer.
According to medicalxpress, metastasis is the ability of cancer cells to spread throughout the body and to other organs. Despite years of research and billions of dollars spent, there is still no MHRA/FDA approved drug to inhibit metastasis, and therefore cancer metastasis remains a fatal, incurable and, of course, mysterious process.
After surgical removal of the primary tumor, most patients undergo chemotherapy and radiation therapy to remove the remaining tumor cells, but this approach is not always successful and people usually suffer from tumor recurrence and metastasis. In a new study, Michael Lisanti and colleagues have designed and tested new inhibitors for cancer metastasis based on an already existing FDA-approved antibiotic called doxycycline. They chemically modified doxycycline so that its potential to target metastatic cancer cells increased fivefold. Fortunately, these changes destroy the antibiotic properties of doxycycline, and as a result, the risk of bacterial antibiotic resistance is minimized.
The results of the study have shown that this new drug called Doxy-Myr, which is the result of adding a fatty acid, was non-toxic in preclinical studies. According to Lisanti, this new drug can prevent cell metastasis by targeting cellular energy production.
