Mathematics and democracy

The idea of #collective_wisdom is based on the fact that – at least under some conditions – large groups of #people act smarter than a single #individual in problem-solving, decision-making, innovation, and forecasting; Even if that person is an expert! The function of collective wisdom is based on the principle that by mediating individual opinions, errors or biases can be eliminated and the correct result can be reached.

One of the most important pieces of evidence in favor of collective wisdom is that when a group of people guess the number of something, the average number of their guesses is often close to the true number! Francis Galton, in his landmark experiment in 1906, observed that the average guess of 800 people who participated in a competition to guess the weight of a cow differed by only 1% from its actual weight!

Collective wisdom is a reason in favor of the fact that #democracy works better than other types of government – especially the rule of one person over society. By collecting people’s #free votes, democracy can make collective decisions that are often more correct than the decision of a leader.
