A new study shows that skilled migrants are not only less dependent on government welfare and do not limit job opportunities, but also make Australia richer.

The report, released by the Australian Home Office and Treasury, comes as demands have been made to reduce the capacity to accept migrants. According to the report, skilled migrants add one per cent to Australia’s GDP every year.

Mary Patestos, of the Australian Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils, welcomed the new report.

“It has a really positive impact on issues related to population and immigration, and confirms the view of many people that immigration has contributed to economic, social and cultural well-being,” he says.

The Australian newspaper reported last week that the number of people entering Australia for permanent residence each year is expected to fall by more than 20,000. The number is currently around 190 thousand people.

One of the main reasons for this decline is the tighter investigations implemented by the Immigration Department since 2015. There are also discussions in the coalition government about reducing the level of immigrant admissions.

Dr Liz Allen, from the Australian National University’s Center for Social Research and Methods, says such a move would not be appropriate.

“Based on the available evidence, the appropriate level of immigrant admission is between 160,000 and 210,000 per year,” he said. So we are keeping the balance in the right way. Any change, whether increasing or decreasing the level of acceptance, should be based on this. And I must warn those who want a drastic change in the level of immigrant acceptance that such a move could lead to a recession in Australia.

According to the report, prepared last year, Australia’s current immigration program, through mitigating the effects of an aging population, will add half to one per cent annually to Australia’s GDP between 2020 and 2050.

Refugees and migrants on humanitarian visas cost Australia $2.7 billion. However, Dr Allen says it is crucial that Australia continues its humanitarian programs in receiving refugees.

According to the report, immigration generally improves Australia’s financial situation, as the taxes paid by immigrants are more than the cost they incur due to the use of social services and government supports.

Nevertheless, the report warns that solutions must be found to ease the current pressure on infrastructure, the housing sector and the environment.

“Taxes paid by immigrants will improve Australia’s situation,” she said.

“I think it’s very important to invest in infrastructure for our population,” he says. I mean, our cities need new infrastructure in terms of housing, roads and education system. We need investment in these areas to make our communities work, and that investment in public infrastructure is not just for new immigrants, but for all of us. So I think with a planned population and immigration policy we can make sure that Australia moves forward.
