Olive export markets and opportunities from Iran and Türkiye (part one)

Olive exports from Iran and Turkey have been growing in recent years due to increased production and demand. For example, in 2020, Iran has exported about 100,000 tons of olives. Also, Türkiye is one of the largest olive producers in the world with more than 400,000 tons of olive production in 2020.
Considering that the export of olives is one of the most important exports of the Persian Gulf countries, the conditions and regulations related to the export of olives from Iran and Türkiye are very important. For example, to export olives from Iran, the necessary permits must be obtained from the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade. Also, in order to export olives to European countries, the products must comply with international standards.
Olive production in Iran
With about 84 thousand hectares of olive groves and an annual production of 100 thousand tons of olives, according to the statistics of the International Olive Council, Iran ranks 14th in the world in terms of area under olive cultivation and 17th in terms of production. Most of Iran’s olive groves are located in Gilan, Zanjan, Fars, Ardabil, Khuzestan, Kermanshah and Ilam provinces. Of the total production of olives in Iran, about 76% is used to produce olive oil and the rest is used to produce edible olives. Iran has produced about 15 thousand tons of olive oil in 2020.
Olive export from Iran
Iran is one of the countries that export olives and olive oil. According to the statistics of Iran Trade Development Organization, in 2020, Iran exported about 28 thousand tons of edible olives worth $40 million and about 4 thousand tons of olive oil worth $12 million.
The main markets for olive exports from Iran are: Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Russia, United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and Pakistan. In 2020, Iran had about 2% of the world export of edible olives and about 1% of the world export of olive oil.
Olive production in Türkiye
Türkiye is one of the largest producers of olives and olive oil in the world. With about 900,000 hectares of olive groves and an annual production of 1.8 million tons of olives, Turkey ranks fourth in the world in terms of area under olive cultivation and fifth in terms of production. Most of the olive groves in Türkiye are located in the Aegean region. Of the total olive production in Türkiye, about 60% is used to produce olive oil and the rest is used to produce edible olives. Türkiye has produced about 400 thousand tons of olive oil in 2020.
Olive export from Türkiye
Türkiye is one of the countries that export olives and olive oil. According to the statistics of the Aegean Exporters Association, in 2020, Turkey exported about 58 thousand tons of olive oil worth 190 million euros and about 100 thousand tons of edible olives worth 100 million euros.
The main markets for olive exports from Türkiye are: America, Spain, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Romania and Italy. In 2020, Türkiye had about 10% of the world export of olive oil and about 20% of the world export of edible olives.
