One minute study
The sixth brain
In Europe, a woman was suffering from a certain type of cancer and was on the verge of death. The doctors believed that only one type of drug could save his life from death and this drug was a type of radium that was recently discovered by a pharmacist who lived in the same city. Making the drug was expensive for the pharmacist, but he sold the drug for 10 times the cost of making it.
He paid $400 for the radium, but sold a small amount of it for $4,000.
Hans, the husband of this sick woman; In order to borrow this amount, he approached all the people he knew and tried all the legal ways, but he only got the amount of 2000 dollars, which is half the price of the medicine.
However, he went to the druggist and told him that his wife was about to die and requested that he provide the drug at a cheaper price, or give him the opportunity to pay this amount later, but the druggist replied to This request said: No, I have discovered the drug and I want to get rich using it! After this, Hans becomes hopeless and thinks to break the door of the pharmacy and steal the medicine for his wife, otherwise he will have to watch his wife’s death.
He after stealing medicine; He saves his wife, but the city police arrest him
Lawrence Kohlberg, the great American psychologist and theorist of the 20th century, asked people to answer two questions by plotting this story:
1- Is stealing medicine by Hans a right action or not?
2- Should Hans be punished for stealing? Why?
Kolberg’s story challenged all the greats of the world. After proposing it, he said that from the answer you can give to this question, I can determine the level of your intelligence and social consciousness, and the most important part of this assessment was the answer to the question why in the second question. Everyone gave a different answer. Even the great politicians of the world answered this question:
1- Yes, it should be punished, theft is breaking the rules and is a sin.
2- That person’s work was not right, but he should not be punished either. Because he was poor and had no choice.
3- Violating the regulations is a sin anyway. Regardless of his wife’s illness.
But when Gandhi was asked this question, he gave a strange answer.
He said: That person’s work was right and he should not be punished, why? Because the law did not come from heaven.
We humans enact the law to live together more easily, if the law is against the life of an innocent human being, it is no longer a law. Human lives are the priority and that law must be changed. Gandhi said that man is before the law.
After hearing Gandhi’s words, Kohlberg said: This is the highest grade that can be given to a brain. Gandhi is the sixth brain (the highest level of social consciousness).
