Politics itself is a way to make money

Politics itself is a way to make money

Mehrzad Boroujerdi, professor of political science at Syracuse University in New York, has raised some interesting points in his recent book entitled “Iran after the Revolution”, which is the result of his fourteen-year research on the political construction of power in Iran. For example, his research has shown that the key jobs of the #Islamic_Republic during the last 40 years have been in the hands of only 2,300 people who happened to have more or less family ties with each other. In other words, the men who are considered “insiders” have held high jobs and positions alternately, and the circulation of power has only happened among them.

Based on this, #marriage with families within the #revolutionary institution has become a custom among them and has caused them to rarely allow an ordinary person into their circle of power. Such alliances have played the role of a coalition and in addition to consolidating relations, they have helped to synergize the political power of the two families. That’s why we shouldn’t be surprised by the connection of #fundamentalist and #reformist families with each other and even the joint business of their nobles. Where power and money are involved, left and right have no meaning!

Borujerdi’s study has shown that during these forty years, change and turnover occurred only in the lower ranks of the power pyramid, and the higher ranks mostly remained unchanged. For example, while the rate of incumbency for the #Parliament is 33% on average and only one-third of the representatives of each period of the Parliament made it to the next period, this rate was 78% for the members of the Expediency Council and 73% for the #Guardian Council! Based on this, it can be said that few people have ruled during these 40 years.

These people have control over the key jobs of the system apart from the political and economic opportunities that each of them have provided for their relative and causal dependents. For various reasons, such as being under surveillance, the men themselves are not able to enter into many economic conflicts, but they can create a platform for #Aghazadeh or other dependents and benefit from the economic benefits of their power indirectly. Now, it may not be so difficult to understand Dr. Bahri’s dialogue in #Aghazadeh series, who has recently become #minister and is a symbol of 2300 people: “#Politics itself is a way to make money, if you know how to play!”
