Syphilis
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
The main way of transmission of syphilis is sexual contact; It can also be transferred from mother to fetus during pregnancy or delivery and lead to congenital syphilis. In Persian, this disease is called Koft-Nir. There is a growing concern in this case that syphilis increases the possibility of transmission (AIDS) by 3-5 times.
Syphilis usually begins with painless sores on the genitals or in the mouth or anus. This phase is called primary infection.
After this stage, bacteria can remain latent and inactive in the body for years and reactivate and cause disease years later. Diagnosis of the disease is usually done through a blood test; Of course, bacteria can also be observed with a microscope.
Syphilis can be effectively treated with antibiotics, especially intramuscular penicillin G (given intravenously for neurosyphilis) or bosftriaxone, and oral doxycycline or azithromycin for those with severe penicillin sensitivity. did
Avoiding physical contact with an infected person and using condoms correctly are effective in reducing the risk of syphilis transmission.
It is also recommended to avoid the use of substances such as alcoholic beverages and other substances that increase risky sexual behaviors in order to prevent the disease.
Although in the 1940s, following the widespread use of penicillin, the rate of syphilis decreased significantly, but after the beginning of the third millennium, the rate of infection has increased in many countries.
In people with syphilis, due to the presence of sores on the penis or lips and tongue, the possibility of infection with the HIV virus increases during sexual contact.
The signs and symptoms of the disease are the same in men and women, and it is difficult to recognize, and it appears 3 months after sexual intercourse with an infected person. Syphilis has several stages. The primary and secondary stages are highly contagious.
Syphilis can appear in one of these four stages: primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary, and can also be congenital.
