The effect of parents’ occupation on children’s health
Research findings have shown that all aspects of parents’ work are directly related to the amount of children’s behavioral problems. Below are some of the highlights of our observations.
For both mothers and fathers, children’s emotional health was greater when parents made family a higher priority, independent of the amount of time parents devoted to work.
Children fare better when parents view work as a source of challenge, creativity, and enjoyment, and again, this is independent of the amount of time devoted to work. Specifically, it was observed that when parents who are satisfied with their work are physically present with their children, the children are in a better state.
Children, if their fathers are too involved in work issues, even if they do not work many hours, they show more behavioral problems.
On the other hand, as much as a father behaves properly inside the house and is satisfied with his work, the children show fewer behavioral problems, and again, this has nothing to do with the amount of working hours.
On the other hand, in the case of mothers, having power and the right to vote in the workplace is associated with greater mental health in their children. In other words, if mothers have control over what happens to them in the work environment, children benefit from this issue.
Also, mothers who take time to relax and take care of their physical and mental health have positive consequences for their children. It’s not just about whether women work outside or inside the home, but it’s about how mothers spend their free and non-working time when they’re inside the house as well. As mothers spend most of their time in housework, children are more exposed to behavioral problems.
By devoting more time to themselves, compared to housework, mothers increase their maternal abilities to raise and take care of their children, and fathers can have better experiences for bring their children.
The good news in this research is that these work-life capabilities of parents are somewhat under their control. The strange thing was that the amount of time parents spend working and taking care of their children has no effect on their children’s mental health.
Therefore, if the impact of our work on our child’s mental health is important to us, we can put more effort into finding creative ways to be physically and mentally present with our children, and we should also know that this issue does not necessarily mean spending more hours with children; The important and main issue is the useful time and the quality of the time we allocate to them.
