Explanation: This article is just an introduction of two books, without any expert position, because the author is not an expert in this field and only shares his reading experience with you as an interested reader.

Reading the history of Ashura on the two days of Tasua and Ashura has a different mood; Especially for those who do not find knowledge in the words of the madahs. Maybe the two books I introduce will be useful to you in these two days.

Rasul Jafarian – a well-known professor of Islamic history at the University of Tehran – has a book titled “Reflections on the Ashura Movement” (Publisher: Ansarian, 2012; Alam Publishing, 2017). These two days of Tasu’a and Ashura are a good opportunity to read this book. You can find its online version and it is better to buy it while respecting the rights of the author and publisher.

Rasul Jafarian has dedicated a part of the book to “Regarding the sources of Ashura history”. He mentions the five books of “Muqtal” as first-hand sources regarding the Ashura incident. Maktal al-Hussein or “Muqtal” in short is the general name of the books that present the narrative of the martyrdom of Hussain bin Ali (AS).

Jafarian writes, “Among the existing authentic maqtals that can be used to investigate the Karbala event with total confidence, there are five that are noteworthy. These five cases are related to the second century to the beginning of the fourth century of Hijri. He mentions these five deaths in the following order: Death of al-Hussain, peace be upon him, Abu Makhnaf, Ibn Saad, Balazri, Dinuri, and Ibn Atham.

Abu Mokhnaf Lot bin Yahya (died 157 AH), is the oldest historian of Karbala. Jafarian considers him to be someone who believed in Shi’ism to the extent common in Kufa. Although the original book of Maktal al-Hussein Abu Mokhnaf has been lost, this book has been reconstructed mainly based on what Muhammad Jarir Tabari, the greatest historian of Islam in the early centuries, mentioned about Bomkhanf.

Reconstructed versions of Abu Mokhnaf’s death, which is the history of the Karbala incident, are available. You can see one of them in the file below. Reading it opens many angles to look at the event of Ashura.

Waqqa al-Taf Labi Makhnaf, researched by Mohammad Hadi Yousefi Gharavi (Qom: Islamic Publications). This book was translated into Farsi by Javad Soleimani under the title “The First Documentary Report of the Ashura Movement” (Qom: Imam Khomeini Research Educational Institute) and by Mohammad Sadiq Rouhani under the title “Translation of Waqqa Al-Taf, Reconstruction of the Death of Al-Hussein Abu Mokhnaf” (Qom: Taha Publications).
