Why is 8 hours of continuous work not productive?
Working eight hours a day is an outdated and unproductive work approach that still exists. Therefore, if you want to achieve acceptable efficiency in your work, you should look for a new method.
The history of eight hours a day goes back to the industrial revolution era. In that period, the duration of work was determined in this way to reduce the number of exhausting working hours of factory workers. Naturally, the implementation of such a system was a kind of successful achievement in the conditions of 200 years ago, but it is not acceptable in the current time conditions.
However, sometimes there is still an expectation to work continuously for 8 hours a day, like our ancestors, with very little rest in between. Coma is that many people are working during their lunch hour.
According to a study conducted by “Darajim Group”, the habits of employees while doing work were recorded in a computer program. This program has measured the amount of time spent on various tasks by employees and compared this time with the productivity of the work. In this measurement process, interesting results were observed. The amount of work efficiency had nothing to do with the duration of the work and was more dependent on the work organization of the people. For example, in a specific case where people had short breaks during the day due to their religious practice, higher work efficiency was observed.
The ideal ratio of work time to rest is 52 to 17 minutes. People who follow this plan experience a higher level of concentration. Therefore, during working hours, they devote 100% of their attention to work and do not go to Facebook or check their emails during this time. If they feel tired (after every one hour of work), they take a short break and take a break from work in that short period of time. This method helps them to continue their work with more energy.
Your brain needs: 15 minutes of rest per hour of work. Discovering this magic ratio will increase people’s productivity tremendously. After an hour of work, the function of the brain jumps to its highest energy level, and it takes about 15 to 20 minutes for this energy to reach its lowest level. For most of us, this natural ebb and flow of brain energy manifests itself in the form of fatigue and distraction.
The best way to get rid of this fatigue and distraction is to be aware of this brain behavior. So after every hour or so of work, when you feel your concentration going downhill, know it’s time to take a break. The more real our breaks, the more productive our workday will be. Sometimes we are seemingly rested but still harboring fatigue. For example, instead of moving away from our desk and taking a walk during our breaks, we entertain ourselves by checking YouTube and email.
